Fish Seized on the Thompson River as part of Fishing Closure Investigation
Merritt CO's recently seized 26 rainbow trout as part of an investigation into two men who are alleged to have fished during a closed time on the Thompson River. None of the fish were over 50cm which would have put the fish into the steelhead category. CO's were patrolling as part of a Fresh Water Fisheries Society of BC Project enforcing the Thompson River angling closure. The fishing closure is in place to protect steelhead.

I saw this today on Facebook, this is horrible news for the Thompson river steelhead. I am not sure the guys would make it to jail had I caught them and been armed, very sad that people feel the need to do this. Wonder what their explanation of reason is, probably were headed for the smoker. Its no wonder the world is facing a wild steelhead, giraffe and elephant extinction, So sad
Trouble with closures is it becomes open season for poachers as there is no one else on the river.
Also makes it easy to catch people when the only ones fishing are poaching
True, if anyone is there. It is the tree falling in the forest bit. Kayakers, hikers etc rarely know the regs and we have less CO's per capita than we had in the fifties. Very few casual walkers on the Thompson in November.
It is the right thing to do but I wonder if it is the effective thing to do.

I believe they are much like thieves, thieves are usually stealing out of greed and the inability to stop doing what they know is wrong. Call them kleptomaniacs if you want but I call them thieves, taking what does not belong to them. I want to leave this world in the best possible condition I can for my children and grandchildren, if that means bonking a poacher instead of a fish, so be it. I feel guilty if I don't recycle and pick up my own mess, I just wish people would think twice before going off and ruining it for everyone. They need to tighten up the penalties for those disobeying the law blatantly like this. If I had walked up behind them, id probably be beat up or in jail
