Been mostly lurking over the winter; hope you're all doing well. I'm still telling people about the amazing time I had at the fall fishout, what a great weekend. So my dad has a big birthday this year and we want to organise a surprise trip and take him somewhere for a couple nights over the Canada Day long weekend. I was leaning towards east coast Vancouver Island. I'm looking for your recommendations; somewhere where he doesn't have to camp (though some of the rest of us possibly could), access to fishing (salmon, rockfish, maybe halibut, crab, etc), accommodate 8-11 of us family and friends, and scenic and enjoyable for those less inclined to fish. Maybe a cabin or house to rent or something like that. He likes his fishing quiet and without crowds or excessive boat traffic and usually isn't flyfishing on the ocean (I know, I know...). I can probably arrange to bring a boat or two and maybe a couple of kayaks.
Most of my experience on the ocean is from the west coast up in Nootka, but I won't be able to work that into the plan. The east coast isn't really my expertise, and I don't know the timing of salmon runs in different areas or if there are any at all at that time (June 30-July 2).
Where would you go if it were you? Thanks in advance.
Couple of recommendations I can think of would be Cluxewe Resort just past Port McNeil, Telegraph Cove before Port McNeil, Pedder Bay near Sooke, and Port Renfrew. That time should be good for Chinooks and bottom fish. You could also fish out of Salmon Point or Pacific playgrounds, salmon should be good up there, but not sure about bottom fish opportunities
you can rent the houses in telegraph cove for a pretty reasonable price theres a few there that would be very close to fitting the size of the group your talking about.you can charter from there or bring your own boat.its senic and a good point for side trips.cluxewe has cabins that are small and could fit maybe 4 people.they get booked very fast but are on the ocean and it has all amenities including boat launch.fom this point you can go to solintula island, and a longer trek for a day trip to san joseph bay which in my opinion I the nicest beach on the island .ive done quite a few north island trips so you can pm me and I can fill you in
Just a quick update. Cluxewe has availability on their cabins. Was looking into having a boat and so far I've found Port Hardy Boat Rentals, haven't had a chance to contact them yet. If anyone has another option for boat rental that I haven't found please let me know. Also, if you or someone you know has a boat on the island that we could use I would be glad to give you what Port Hardy is asking for rental fees.
