Had an Amazon gift card sitting around. I also got myself 40' of T20. The goal is lingcod, rockfish, springs, or halis. Mostly just want to check "ling on a fly" off the bucket list. But heavier fly gear for saltwater is not my realm of experience. How would you dress this reel up? What backing and running line would you go with? I have a spool of 20lb backing somewhere, would that be appropriate?
Honestly Dave, if you wanna get down and get down fast I would skip the fly line part and wind the reel with some dacron to cover the spool and the rest mono. Loop the mono and loop your t20. Even if you had fly line, you wouldn't be able to cast it. That's just my 2 cents but I have also seen guys fish lings with a full sink line and just count down. You should be able to find the video on you tube easily
My Lingcod set up is backing to a type 6 sinking line(not Necessary) to 30ft of T20 to a short section of 15lb( weak point, in case I snag bottom) to 3-5ft of 30-40lb mono (lingcod have sharp teeth).
I haven't hooked up to a Ling by fly yet, but was getting down to bottom, and did get a rock cod. The wind keep me off the water a lot of the times I wanted to get out, but looking forward to trying again this year.
I would use 30lb backing if going for big game. You probably do want to put in a weak point in case you get hung up, but you don't want that to be in your backing. After that, I would do a mono running line (Berkley Big Game or similar), t-20 head, leader, tippet, fly.
Very curious to hear how that reel holds up to salt water and big fish!
A weak point is necessary, I found out the hard way after I lost 30ft of T20 last year, as I had a old braided loop connection on the end of my fly line that was obviously not as strong as my 15lb weak point. I was lucky enough to get more T30 when Wholesale had it on cheap last year, but it is now $45 plus if I had to replace.
What weight rod are you using? Is 30' of T20 really necessary to get down?
I am using a 8 wt, no 30ft of t20 is not necessary, but it gets down quicker. I don't attempt to cast more than 20ft, and then just strip line out as it sinks. Another cheaper option to T20 is leadcore.
