So heard some more bad news today about the Cowichan. I had already heard that Sandy Pool Park has been closed do to flood damage and that the Broadway Run just above Skutz Falls was also damaged.
Today I heard that the Lower Washout run the River has changed course thru the side channel and flows down directly to hole in the wall. Basically we have lost 3-4 good runs and 500m to 1km of Spawning ground. I stole some pics off of facebook where the info was posted on the Duncan Salmon and Steelhead page.
Is this just below Sandy Pool? The tree's kind of look like what we use to call "the long run". One will have to be very careful drifting it. I was thinking of going for a walk up Holt Creek area this weekend. Anyone interested?
Thanks for posting this. Too bad about losing those runs, but I'm not surprised. That former side channel was looking pretty ready to take over last year. It'll be interesting to get out there see how the river's changed when the water comes down a bit more.
OK. I see it now. I pictured a High bank on the left where the road goes and some houses but it punched through a hard right. I haven't fished the Washout in decades but it use to be one we raced to, to be first back in the 80's. I think we are see the river correcting to what it was before the "washout". A few Oxbows have disappeared in the last decade. Alder Run, one of my favourite runs just below 70.2 is no more, as is Cougar run (Sawmill pool), which is that big dead back water a couple of km above Skutz.
